Know the profile difference

Quarter round has a fuller curved profile, while shoe mould is typically narrower and can feel more integrated with the baseboard.

Cover the floor expansion gap

Finishing trim bridges the transition between baseboard and flooring while allowing the floor assembly to retain its required perimeter space.

Coordinate the trim style

Standard, colonial, bevel-step and modern shoe profiles can echo the baseboard above for a more deliberate finish.

Measure the room perimeter

Calculate exposed wall runs, subtract openings where appropriate and include extra material for corners, joints and cuts.

Buyer questions

Quarter round and shoe mould FAQs

What is the difference between quarter round and shoe mould?

Quarter round has a quarter-circle profile. Shoe mould is usually slimmer and gives a more subtle transition at the baseboard.

Should shoe mould match the floor or baseboard?

It is often painted to match the baseboard, but the finish choice depends on the flooring, room style and desired visual transition.

Is shoe mould always required?

Not always. It is useful where an expansion gap or uneven floor edge needs a clean finished transition.

Can I quote shoe mould with my baseboards?

Yes. Include it in the same project quote so profiles, quantities and availability can be coordinated.
