    Choose the right baseboard profile

    Start with the style of the room and the height of the ceiling. Simple stepped and flat-stock profiles suit clean contemporary spaces, while colonial, classical and detailed profiles add a more traditional finish. Taller baseboards create stronger visual definition in larger rooms and open layouts.

    MDF, pine and poplar baseboards

    Primed MDF offers a smooth, paint-ready surface and broad profile selection. Finger-jointed pine is a practical wood option for painted applications, while poplar is a strong choice when a solid-wood profile or custom finishing matters. Product availability, lengths and dimensions vary by profile.

    Build a coordinated trim package

    Baseboards work best when their scale and profile relate to nearby door and window casings. Add quarter round or shoe mould where flooring transitions require a clean edge, and coordinate crown moulding or wall details to carry the same design language through the project.

    What baseboard height should I choose?

    The right height depends on ceiling height, casing proportions and the look you want. Mid-height profiles offer balance, while taller baseboards create a more substantial finish in larger rooms.

    Is MDF or wood better for baseboards?

    MDF is smooth, stable and well suited to painted interior trim. Finger-jointed pine and poplar are wood options for specific profiles, installation conditions or finishing requirements.

    Should baseboards match door casings?

    They do not need to be identical, but their profile style and proportions should feel coordinated. Trim Depot can help pair baseboards with compatible casings and backbands.

    Do baseboards come primed?
