    Plan casings around the actual openings

    Check the available wall space

    Measure from each jamb to nearby walls, cabinets and switches. A wide casing that works on one doorway may not fit an opening close to a corner. Note these exceptions in the opening schedule.

    Compare thickness at the junctions

    View the casing beside the proposed baseboard and any backband. Check the face alignment and how the profiles meet at the bottom of the opening. A backband changes the overall width and depth; include both pieces when checking clearances.

    Make a cut list for each opening

    Record both legs and the head, whether one or both faces are being trimmed, and the intended corner joint. Confirm the usable lengths for your chosen profile before turning those measurements into piece quantities.

    Compare baseboards and door jambs and headers as part of the same package. For repair work, bring a sample of the existing trim rather than relying on a photograph alone.

    Choose the right casings and backbands

    Narrower casings suit restrained openings, while wider profiles add visual weight. A backband wraps the casing’s outer edge and can create a more substantial frame without changing the main profile.

    Plan the project before ordering

    Count doors and windows, include both sides where applicable, and record unusual wall thicknesses or returns. Compare the casing thickness with the selected baseboard before quoting.

    Coordinate related products

    Review adjoining profiles, materials and components together so dimensions and transitions are resolved before quantities are finalized.
